about
I moved to Nashville in 2017, and one of my favorite parts about this area are the beautiful parks and the dogwood trees in the springtime. This song is the first single from our new album Heal the Heart, which will be released September 30, 2022. Much of this album was written in a quest for healing and deeper truths, so I was not surprised when the flowering dogwood tree presented itself as the theme for a new song! For me, the dogwood tree is a wonderful symbol of transformation, hope, and perseverance. We all need to be reminded of the reasons for hoping and persevering, and nature itself is often the best reminder. When a tree transitions into dormancy, a lot of amazing things happen that we humans never see — all the adaptations the tree makes to conserve energy and stay alive through the harsh winter. It perseveres and prepares for a time when the warmth of the sun will invite it, once again, to open in a joyful array of blossoms. Arranging this song with my band mates and recording with Nick Bullock was a pure joy! Bryan Brock’s accompaniment on the African calabash, Will MacLean’s banjo playing, Patrick Atwater’s bass lines combined with Hannah Holbrook’s accordion have such a buoyant energy that make me want to dance! Lyrically, this song was inspired by the internal rhyming and phrasing of folk songs and contemporary songs from Ireland and Scotland. This music is very close to my heart and continues to shape my voice as a songwriter!

lyrics
“Dogwood Tree”
By The Deer’s Cry
A sky of blue is breaking through
The shadow in my heart.
I rise to see the dogwood tree
Embrace its brand-new start.
The blossoms grow as white as snow
And grace the lonesome ground
With whispered dreams of far-off streams
Where living waters flow.
Beneath its shade I’ve often prayed
And fallen into sleep—
Yet now I wake, for something spake
And caused mine eyes to weep!
My broken mind and every kind
Of sorrow and disgrace;
The blossoms fall and do recall
The covering of His grace.
